Here are some of the most important lessons I’ve learned:
Family sessions rarely go as planned—and that’s okay! Kids might get cranky, parents might feel nervous, or the weather might surprise us. I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected and let moments unfold naturally. Patience creates an environment where families feel comfortable, leading to authentic and heartwarming photos.
The best family photos aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed. They’re the ones that capture real connection—a shared laugh, a tender hug, or even a messy, playful moment. I focus on creating opportunities for families to interact and connect during the session rather than forcing stiff poses.
A successful family photoshoot starts long before I pick up the camera. Clear communication with families about what to wear, how to prepare their kids, and what to expect on the day of the shoot makes a huge difference. A little guidance can turn nervous clients into confident ones.
Children bring energy, curiosity, and spontaneity to a session. I’ve learned to let them take the lead at times, following their curiosity and capturing their natural personalities. The result? Photos that truly reflect who they are in that moment.
No two families are the same, and that’s what makes my job so rewarding. I make it a point to get to know each family beforehand, understanding their dynamics, special traditions, and what they love about each other. This personal connection helps me capture images that feel authentic and meaningful.
Whether it’s shifting locations last minute due to weather or switching up the game plan when a toddler decides they’re done posing, flexibility is crucial. The more adaptable I am, the better the experience for the family—and the better the photos turn out.
It’s not just about the big, beautiful family portraits. Sometimes, the magic is in the details: a child’s tiny hand gripping their parent’s finger, a dad’s loving gaze at his family, or the way siblings laugh together. These details tell the story of a family’s love in a way words never could.
When families are having fun, their joy radiates through the photos. I often incorporate games, jokes, or playful prompts to keep the mood light and relaxed. The goal is for families to walk away from the session with not just beautiful photos, but a memory of a wonderful experience together.
Families often focus on their perceived imperfections—whether it’s a bad hair day or a toddler’s tantrum. Over the years, I’ve learned to gently reassure clients that the imperfections are part of what makes the photos special. Life is beautifully imperfect, and photos should reflect that.
Family portraits are more than pictures; they’re heirlooms. They capture a moment in time that families will cherish for generations. Recognizing this has made me approach every session with a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude for the opportunity to create something timeless.
Photographing families has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. It’s a constant reminder of the love, connection, and stories that make life so beautiful. Each family I work with teaches me something new and inspires me to keep honing my craft.
If you’re considering a family photoshoot, know this: it’s not just about getting a perfect photo. It’s about celebrating your unique bond and preserving the joy of your journey together.
